want to upgrade cj7 with a 304 t150 three speed an a dana 20 to a 4 or 5 speed with a better transfer case any suggestions thanks cheers

Stay away from any 3 speed manual transmission.

I put a T-18 in my CJ5 behind a 304 and really like it. First gear is 6.32 to 1. It's a pretty tough trans.

I agree with Rusty CJ..I have ran T-18's in two Jeeps both with Dana 20 Tcases and 38" swampers and they are bomb proof. Love the long throw shift and the granny low.

Best part is they a dirt cheap and bolt right in.

Depends on what your trying to accomplish. Nothing wrong with your present setup as far as strength goes-although the T150 is marginal. The dana 20 is a stout case but only has a 2:1 low gear. The T18 is bulletproof but on the street it will be just like your T150 because you'll never use low gear. Off road the granny gear is great. If you have stock 3.54 gears your "crawl" ratio wtih this stup is about 44:1 vs 21:1 which you have now. I have not seen any dirt cheap T18's but they have come down in price. I recently sold one for $400. Another alternative is a later model T176 4 speed and dana 300 case from an 80-86 CJ. This tranny is about the same strength as your T150 but has a better spread of gears. Your crawl ratio here would be about 36:1 with the lower first gear and lower gears in the transfer case. The price of these is probabaly higher than that of a T18. There are many other options avaialable. Just depends on wht you're looking for, how much $$ you want to spend and how good your fabrication skills are.
